Tree Roots is Clyde Kurtis, native to the Northwest, backed by a sympathetic set of derelicts he’s found in his travels across the country. Less a band of musicians, they’re more a band of brothers, brought close and held fast by their collective set of bad circumstances and hard living. They have built their own Tortilla Flat, the walls papered and bowing with music that they’ve learned and all the things they’re trying to forget.
Their music is every bit of joy and hurt in the world to them. Clyde, singer and rhythm guitarist, draws heavily from old New Orleans where he spent some years prior to Katrina. Lyman "Thin Man" Jones, lead guitarist, draws from an old farmhouse phonograph and the box of scratchy vinyl it came with, anything from Art Tatum to Woodie Guthrie. Michael Stasiak, drummer, sounds “like the ghost of Gene Krupa with an overhead cam and glasspacks and the whispering brushes of wet radials on a wet pavement.” Tom Waits may have said that.
Tree Roots has performed with PWRFL Power, Okay (Marty Anderson of Howard Hello and Dilute), Mount Eerie, and the lovely Julie Doiron. Clyde and the band currently live, love, and play in New York City.
